OVERVIEW:
This Special Interest Group reviews the causes and consequences of over-reading EEG records.
EEG misinterpretation resulting in misdiagnoses of epilepsy is common—about 30% of patients sent to epilepsy centers for intractable epilepsy have been misdiagnosed. Of these misdiagnosed patients, many received a wrong diagnosis based on an ‘abnormal’ EEG.
Presenters discuss potential solutions to over-reading EEG records and whether computers and software can assist in solving this problem.

- Explain the importance of the EEG over-interpretation in the misdiagnosis of seizures
- Propose solutions to avoid over-interpretations of EEGs
- Discuss whether computers and software can offer solutions to the problem of EEG over-interpretation
